The Best Time to Visit the Moroccan Sahara
The Sahara transforms with the seasons. From mild spring evenings to scorching summer days and crisp winter nights, here is a month-by-month guide to choosing the best time for your Moroccan desert adventure.
Timing Is Everything in the Desert
The Moroccan Sahara is breathtaking year-round, but the experience shifts dramatically with the seasons. Get the timing right and you will enjoy golden dunes under perfect skies; get it wrong and you may face punishing heat or bitter overnight cold. This guide breaks the year down season by season so you can plan your desert trip with confidence.
Spring (March to May): The Sweet Spot
Spring is widely considered the best time to visit the Moroccan Sahara. Daytime temperatures are warm but comfortable, typically ranging from the low 20s to the low 30s Celsius, while evenings cool pleasantly. The light is soft, the skies are usually clear, and the desert is at its most photogenic. This is the ideal window for camel treks and multi-day expeditions to Erg Chegaga, when you can walk for hours without battling the heat.
Autumn (September to November): The Other Favourite
Autumn rivals spring for the top spot. As the brutal summer heat fades, conditions become highly favourable once again, with warm days and mild nights. October in particular is excellent, offering stable weather and fewer crowds than peak holiday periods. If spring dates do not suit your calendar, autumn is the natural alternative.
Winter (December to February): Crisp Days, Cold Nights
Winter brings clear, sunny days that are perfect for exploring, with comfortable daytime temperatures often in the high teens to low 20s. The catch is the night. Once the sun sets, desert temperatures can plunge to near freezing, and dawn on the dunes is genuinely cold. Winter is a wonderful time to visit if you come prepared:
- Pack thermal layers, a warm jacket, hat, and gloves for the evenings
- Choose a camp with proper bedding and blankets
- Embrace the crisp, clear nights, which offer some of the best stargazing of the year
Summer (June to August): Best Avoided
Summer in the Sahara is extreme. Daytime temperatures regularly exceed 40°C and can climb higher, making any sustained desert activity uncomfortable and potentially dangerous. Camel treks are largely off the table. If you must travel in summer, keep desert time short, stick to early mornings and evenings, and stay hydrated. For most travellers, this is the season to avoid.
A Month-by-Month Snapshot
- March to May: ideal, warm days and cool nights, best for trekking
- June to August: very hot, not recommended for desert stays
- September to November: excellent, warm and stable, fewer crowds
- December to February: sunny days but very cold nights, pack warm layers
Don't Forget the Day-Night Swing
Whatever month you choose, remember that the desert's defining feature is its enormous temperature swing between day and night. Even in the mildest seasons, evenings turn chilly fast once the sun drops. Layered clothing is essential year-round.
